My hair and I have always had a complicated relationship. To be fair, I haven’t always been the kindest to it. I suppose the frequent dips in the chlorine-saturated pools of my swim-lesson-enthusiast childhood, my lifeguarding job in my young- adulthood, and the recurrent flat-ironing sessions of the past, present (and future??) have always taken a toll on my already inherently disheveled strands of hair.
However, the products below are my saving graces. They are what whip my hair into such great shape despite all of the trauma that it regularly endures. Aside from keeping my hair looking shiny and healthy, they also aid in extending the longevity of my hairstyles and bringing life back into what I’m surprised isn’t already a ratchet cluster of straw hanging limply from my head.
On that note, allow me to share with you some of the products that I’ve been using to style and maintain the health of my hair for years now: my tried and trues, my favourite hair care products! No matter how many other hair products I’ve tried, I always find myself gravitating back to these:
This one is an oldie but a goodie. If you have been watching beauty YouTubers for a while now then Macadamia’s Deep Repair Masque has probably been recommended to you at least once. It’s one of the first products that “YouTube made me buy” (so to speak) because everyone and their mother was hyping it up back when it was all the rage (I would have been in high school at the time). While I’ve been disappointed with a MAJORITY of the products that I’ve bought on the basis of YouTuber’s recommendations (that’s what I get for taking the advice of paid promos), THIS OG product has never let me down. Because it’s on the more expensive side, I try to use this sparingly, about once a week or once every two weeks.
After shampooing, I’ll wring out all my hair, then apply this handsomely on the ends and work the product up to about the middle of my hair. Once all of my hair has been saturated with this heavenly gunk, I leave the mask on for anywhere from 7 minutes (as it recommends on the package) to a half hour! Before you judge: I DO notice a difference when I keep it in longer, and I don’t just stand there in the shower when I leave it on for that long – I will usually just wrap my hair up in a bun or shower cap and wait it out while watching some youtube or reading a book before re-entering the shower to rinse the mask off. Don’t go wasting water yall!
This mask brings so much moisture and shine back into my hair while simultaneously sealing up split ends to make my hair look so much healthier. It’s the perfect product to use for a special occasion when you want your hair to look it’s best!
If you are looking for an all-natural leave-in-conditioner then I highly recommend this! Aside from leaving my hair smelling amazing, this leave-in-treatment softens and hydrates my hair and helps prevent split ends when I apply 410 degrees F heat to it :’) You can find this at specialty health/health foods stores like Wholefoods or your local equivalent shop.
I squeeze a coin-sized amount of this stuff in my hands before applying it evenly throughout my hair, avoiding my scalp, because that area already gets enough moisture as it is lmao.
Like most decent leave-in conditioners, this product CONDITIONS your hair (who would have thought) by providing it with moisture and soft texture without weighing it down, as I find cheap leave-in treatments or overly-intensive ones tend to do.
I love that I’ve been using this product for YEARS and I’ve NEVER bought the full-size version of it. Sephora offers this deluxe sample-size leave-in-treatment as part of their “100 points” rewards so frequently that I’ve always just cashed in my points to buy these, seeing as such a little amount goes such a long way. Thus, these little guys last for ages, and by the time I need to start considering a repurchase – Sephora has it propped up on their rewards stand again for 100 points a pop.
I squeeze a DOLLOP (I simultaneously love and hate that word so much. It’s like the word “moist”. I can’t fucking stand the sound of it but I also can’t stop using it on the account of it sounding so damn hilarious….shit, where was I?) of this stuff on my hand after getting out of the shower and applying my leave-in-conditioner above. Then, I apply it evenly to the ends of my hair.
As advertised on the packaging: this product really allows for my heat-induced hairstyles to last longer than usual. It helps hold my textured curls in place and my straightened hair nice and smooth so I don’t need to touch up in between hair styling sessions. It’s super nice because it saves me time and potential hair damage too! Because of this product, I typically only have to style my hair with heat once after I shower – and then the style lasts for days, until the next time I shower!
I’ve been using this product since the 9th grade (I’m in my 3rd year of university now) and I’ve only ever had to buy TWO of these travel-size oils (and the first bottle I bought I accidentally knocked over and lost half of the product lmfao). While it is advertised as a “face oil” on Sephora’s website, argan oil can be used on your skin, nails, and body if you’d like. I chose to buy the “light” version because some trusted YouTubers recommended it for people that are already prone to having oily skin/hair. This light variation is supposed to still provide moisture to your hair without being as heavy and overpowering as it’s original counterpart. Plus, I’m pretty satisfied with the amoint of moisture it reintroduces to my hair – I don’t think I need anything heavier.
I pipette the SMALLEST amount of this into my hand (usually no more than one drop), rub the serum between my palms and then apply this all throughout my hair, concentrating the product on my split ends and my frizzy bangs.
This oil is seriously what takes my hairstyle game to the next level. It gives my hair so much shine without weighing out down whatsoever, effectively creating a false narrative about the state of my hair ahahah! It always makes my hair look so much healthier than it actually is. I can NOT recommend this product enough! The travel size that I’ve been buying is only 20 dollars, and as I’ve said, I’ve been using it since the ninth grade. You do the math 😉
Like the previous product, this also shows up in Sephora’s “prize” options fairly regularly, so I’ll buy it with points when I can, or grab it in a smaller size so that I can travel easily with it (I’ve never been fond of the huge ass sizes of a lot of hairspray bottles in the first place – they are so hard to store and travel with!)
It’s hairspray. Spray it….on your hair :’)
This does a great job of keeping my hairstyle in place, whether it’s an updo I want to ensure doesn’t fall apart or curls that I want to keep from losing elasticity and bounce – this always gets the job done.
This. Stuff. Is. A. Godsend. I kid you not, by Friday, my hair is 90 percent dry shampoo. Klorane’s dry shampoo products work so brilliantly well they just make all the other dry shampoos I’ve ever tried look and feel like glorified baby powder. I use the “oily hair” variation which is SUPPOSED to not be as good as the original? But as a member of the oily hair club, I can fully attest that I’ve actually found this version to work a touch better…but everyone’s hair and experiences are different of course!
With a brush, I’ll lift portions of my dry hair up to expose the oily roots and then spray this stuff about a foot away from the target zone. I’ll then repeat this, lifting and spraying until I’ve covered all the oily areas in a fine, refreshing coat of dry shampoo powder. Once that’s all done I massage these areas with my fingertips (the way I would massage my scalp when I apply shampoo in the shower) until all of the residues have disappeared. I then comb my hair and wash the grease off of my hands shortly thereafter.
Aside from masking the appearance of my oily, 3rd-day hair, this dry shampoo also volumizes and lifts my hair! It doesn’t intervene with my hairstyle either, so if I’ve curled my hair, this doesn’t destroy the curls, and if I’ve straightened my hair, this doesn’t revert my hair back to its relaxed state. If you are a female student with long hair and even longer hours of productivity like me then you’ve probably already ventured into the world of dry shampoo. I highly implore that you give this one a shot! In Canada, you can find it at Shoppers drug mart!
There you have it – my industry secrets! The products that I use to maintain the health, longevity and style of my hair, despite all of the crap that I put it through. What are YOUR favourite hair products? Any other steps to your hair care routine that I’m missing? I’d always be down to hear them!
